Week 2 is upon us.
The Knights week 1 matchup with the Cashmere Bulldogs didn't turn out as planned. The young Royal team was put through the fire of Cashmere's precision running attack. The Bulldogs accumulated over 300 yards rushing and ran the ball on over 96% of their offensive snaps. They only threw the ball twice, one of which was intercepted and returned for a 40-yard TD by Royal junior Daniel Vermeer.
Offensively, the Knights got off to a shaky start with two early turnovers that led to points for Cashmere. Royal did settle down a bit after that and was able to work their way back to a 13-13 tie. Cashmere was able to capitalize on some big plays in the second half and extend the lead out of reach, but the Knights refused to give up and Sophomore QB Alex Myrick led the Knights down the field for a TD in the final two minutes of the game. One of the bright spots of the night for Royal was the running ability of Myrick, who finished the game with 164 yards on just 9 carries. Senior running back Dylan Delay also had two rushing TD's in the second half.
This Friday the Knights will face another Caribou Trail League opponent when they face the Omak Pioneers. While Royal faced a very tough challenge in week 1 against Cashmere, the Pioneers essentially played a tune-up game against a struggling Kettle Falls squad from the Northeast A League. The Pioneers won the contest 47-7 and had a 40-0 lead at halftime.
Omak will be well represented at the QB position by 3-year starter Brenden Aguilar. He will be flanked by a talented receiving core, which includes Senior Rylan Springer and Junior Joseph LaGrou. Their running attack will be done by committee as they strive to replace the production of Omak's all-team leading rusher CJ Lockwood, who graduated last year. The Pioneers also lost most of their defensive front to graduation and will adjust this year to a 3-man front in order to get more athletes on the field at the linebacker position.
The Knights offense is still a work-in-progress and will work to maintain a balanced offensive attack in an attempt to build some early momentum against the Pioneers. Limiting turnovers will be key in building the confidence of the young Royal squad. Defensively, Royal's quickness and athleticism should match-up well against an Omak offense that wants to put the ball in the air.
Which team will be better served by their week 1 game? Will Royal's tough loss to Cashmere allow them to see their shortcomings and shore them up in time for Friday night? Will Omak's easy win over Kettle Falls give them the confidence to come into Royal and get the win?
