Spring is here (Sort of), and that means another season of Boys Soccer at RHS.
Last season the boys made it into districts, but were knocked out in the 3rd round by Highland in an intense 2-1 loss in which Royal scored first and had a goal called back late in the second half. Highland went on to place second at the state tournament.
We have another good group of freshman coming into the program this year. The middle school splitting the boys and girls programs into the Fall and the Spring has turned out to be a great move for both of the High School programs.
The Varsity is shaping up to be a good mix of young and older players, and the younger guys are always pushing the older ones to raise their level of play.
We have 6 returning Varsity starters this season:
Luis De La Rosa - 12th Grade
Roman Trujillo - 12th Grade
Benny Carmona - 12th Grade
Jesus Ceja - 11th Grade
Manual Martinez - 11th Grade
Roy Angel - 11th Grade
Luis Esquivel - 10th Grade
We are also returning a good number of players who saw quite a bit of time last season and gained some great experience at the Varsity level:
Jonathan Ocampo - 12th Grade
Matias Marmelejo - 12th Grade
Adam Martinez - 10th Grade
Carlos Barajas - 10th Grade
Elias Corona - 10th Grade
Shaq Ledezma - 10th Grade
We suffered a bit of a setback in losing our 2 starting forwards from last season due to those players moving out of the district, but it provides an opportunity for other players to step up and show they are capable of scoring goals as well.
The defense will be solid. We lost First Team defender Miguel Santana, but Jesus Ceja has stepped into his place and it appears that he will bring the same aggressiveness and presence to the center of the defense.
We also lost a strong player in the center of the park in Jesus Rodriguez, but once again, I have been pleased to see that we have a number of players that are in competition for that spot. Luis DLR, Matias, Luis E, and Adam should all see minutes in the center of the midfield. All of these players bring something different to that position so it will be fun to watch them develop.
There have been a few changes to the league this year. The league was split in two: East and West. We will be in the East League and as such the only matches that will count toward qualification for districts will be our games with: Connell, Wahluke, Warden, and Ki-Be. This should make for an exciting and hard fought season for all teams.
Join us for a match on the new FieldTurf under the lights in the stadium. Varsity will play at 6pm on weeknights, and 11am on Saturday. We pushed for the move to FieldTurf in the stadium so we could move kickoff to an hour in which more parents could attend, and we welcome you to our new home in the David Neilson Memorial Stadium.
