Knights take control of 4th quarter to seal victory.
The Knights hosted the Goldendale Timberwolves for the 3rd straight year in the crossover playoff. The Knights came out on top for the 3rd time, but Goldendale certainly put up a better fight this time than they had in the previous 2 meetings. Royal scored first to take a 7-0 lead, then the Timberwolves scored late in the half to draw it to even heading into the halftime break. In the 2nd half Royal and Goldendale traded touchdowns and failed extra point attempts to produce a 13-13 tie early in the 4th quarter. With their season on the line, the Knights came to life to take control of the 4th quarter and control of the game by scoring three unanswered TD's to close out the contest. The first was a 24-yard QB scamper by Marc Albertson. The second was a one play drive resulting from a muffed punt by the Timberwolves. Albertson found Ben Singer in the left corner of the endzone for a 23-yard score. The final blow to the Timberwolve hopes was an 35-yard interception return for a TD by Singer. Final Score: Royal 32-Goldendale 13.
A number of Knights turned in effective performances and helped the Knights to victory. Dylan Delay scored the Knights first 2 TD's; on the ground and through the air, and turned in a fine defensive effort on a hobbled ankle. Ben Singer came through in the 4th quarter to register the final 2 TD's for the Knights. Marc Albertson threw 2 TD passes and ran for a TD and led the Knights in rushing yards. Ultimately, the Performer of the Game honor was awarded to Senior Lineman Ernie "Tito" Garza for a great defensive effort including several tackles for loss at critical junctures of the game, including a QB sack the resulted in a 15-yard loss.
The Knights' victory propels them into a 1st round playoff matchup against one of the hottest teams in the state. The Chelan Goats may have a sub-.500 record coming into this contest, but after an upset victory over the defending State Champion Cashmere Bulldogs last week, they are carrying as much momentum into this round as anyone in any classification in the state. They have found a very talented QB in Freshman Michael Amsel and revamped their offensive scheme to take better advantage of his athleticism. He is a dual-threat athlete who is surrounded by young talent. RB's Peterson, Schwartz, and Weathersby have shared the rushing load nearly equally by combining for over 1,000 yards and 23 TD's on the ground. Amsel's primary target through the air is Junior Receiver Aaron McQuaid, a 6'4" target with 5 receiving TD's and a 20.5-yard average per catch. All of this offense takes place with the help of a massive O-Line that includes Seniors Doug Ramsey (6'4", 300 lbs) and Colter Courtney (6'5", 300 lbs), as well as Junior Quin Courtney (a dimunitive 6'1", 265 lbs).
This game will be a tight one and will favor the team that makes the fewest mistakes. Both teams have wide-open offenses. Will the Knights be able to put enough pressure on Amsel to shake his confidence? Are the Goats comfortable enough with their new offense to make a run deep into the playoffs? Will Royal be able to create creases for their running game and maintain a balanced attack? Who will move on?
